Wills and Legacies

Leaving a gift in your will to the Heart of Headcorn ensures that you leave your money to a genuine organisation which you have seen supporting local people.

There are three types of gift that you can leave in your will:

Residuary Gift

This is a percentage of your estate once any specified gifts have been made to friends and family. The benefit of this type of gift because it does not lose value over time and it ensures that loved ones are taken care of first and foremost.

Pecuniary Gift

This is a specific amount of money. It’s worth bearing in mind that the effects of inflation mean that this type of gift is likely to lose value over time and may end up being less than you initially intended.

Specific Gift

This is a gift of a specified item – such as a personal possession, land, buildings or stocks and shares. Some people believe that leaving such items to charity may save family members from the burden of having to sell or manage them and may prevent ownership disputes.

It is recommended that anybody wishing to leave any of the above gifts obtains independent legal advice beforehand.

If you wish to amend an existing will in order to leave a gift to the Heart of Headcorn, the easiest way is to ask your solicitor to draft an amendment called a codicil.

The following wording is recommended:

For a residuary gift:

‘I give the residue of my estate to the Heart of Headcorn CIO, 23 Brooklands, Headcorn, Kent TN27 9QS (Registered Charity Number –  1198117) for its general charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of the Chairman or other proper officer of the said charity for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said gift’.

For a pecuniary / specific gift:

‘I give the sum of £….. (or the item specified) to the Heart of Headcorn CIO, 23 Brooklands, Headcorn, Kent TN27 9QS (Registered Charity Number – 1198117) for its general charitable purposes.
